A constitutional amendment recognizing marriage as a union between one man and one woman would be most effective at the federal level. It seems very possible Idaho's constitutional declaration that, "A marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal untion that shall be valid or recognized in this state," could eventually be struck down as violative of the Full-Faith and Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution. However, public policy and principles shouldn’t be compromised, or avoided, simply to avoid a legal battle.

The Government should not be in the business of regulating the activities of what people are doing with others in the sanctity of their own home. However, the Government should not be required to publically sanction the alternative lifestyle associated with a homosexual relationship. Whether called same-sex marriage, same-sex unions or otherwise, Idaho should not codify, and thereby formally endorse, lifestyles that depart from Idaho’s traditional family values.
